Thank You for Bombing

War/Drama, Austria 2015

"Thank you for Bombing" accompanies three correspondents to their working place in conflict areas and gives an insight into their daily routine aside from cameras and satellite phones - somewhere between bombing alarm, laundry and Bach flower remedies. “'Only bad news are good news. Thank You For Bombing tells the story of those who, while not providing an appetite for the horrors of war, are at least encouraged to satisfy their hunger for the latest terrible news. But more than this kind of competition in its cynical and brutal forms - and far removed from any kind of media satire - Eder is interested in the psychological effects on her protagonists: what does war do to a person whose task and goal is to be an eyewitness? Thank You For Bombing plays through these different states in an almost exemplary way. Trauma, despair, self-humiliation, anger, sarcasm. The fact that the individual stories themselves sometimes take on a lurid tone may seem unpleasantly disturbing at first glance, but it serves its purpose. For it is precisely in its dramatically heightened moments that this film most vividly conveys the feeling of being a direct witness. Even if one would perhaps prefer to look away.
