London, 1902: The young artist Beatrix Potter creates self-illustrated stories with animals as protagonists. Protected by her wealthy family, Beatrix still lives under the same roof as her strict parents. Her mother in particular is less than impressed by her daughter's ambitions, especially as no publisher wants to take a chance on stories like “The Tale of Peter Rabbit”.
Against her parents' wishes, Betrix decided to have her work published as a children's book anyway. The owners of the publishing house Warne Brothers, the brothers Harold and Fruing Warne, initially laugh at Beatrix's unappreciated work, but decide to have the publication supervised by her youngest brother Norman. The first book becomes an instant bestseller, Norman's sister (Emily Watson) becomes his closest friend and Norman himself soon becomes the celebrated illustrator's lover - another thorn in the side of Beatrix's status-conscious parents...
The story of “Miss Potter” explores the heart and imagination of its title character, for whom her creations of animals with human characteristics seemed more real than the conventions of Victorian England. Renée Zellweger proves to be the ideal cast, honored with a sixth Golden Globe nomination, of a woman who holds on to her dreams and her lover against all odds and whose work “The Tale of Peter Rabbit” was to become one of the best-selling children's books of all time.
